Wild Atlantic Way

Think white sandy beaches and dramatic crashing waves; lush green fields; majestic mountains in hues of brown and grey; and skies that will make you gasp in awe.

So breathtakingly beautiful is Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way that it’s almost impossible to put into words. The task becomes even more difficult given that it changes with the seasons, offering a variety of views, colours and light.

Whatever time of year you visit however, you need to see it with your own eyes, taste the salt water on your lips and feel the wind against your face as it whips your hair and fills you with energy. More than just stunning scenery, the Wild Atlantic Way is an experience and one that is unique.

Launched in February 2014 by Failte Ireland, this 2,500km (1,500 miles) route traverses the entire rugged west coast of Ireland, from Cork, through counties Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and of course Donegal.

Bundoran is a prime example of its beauty and unlike some other parts of the route, remains relatively untouched.

Not only will you be wooed by the views of its dramatic coastline, you’ll be amazed at its surfing potential.
Bundoran was named in the ‘World’s Top 20 Surfing Resorts’ by National Geographic in 2012 and was recently named Ireland’s ‘Best Place to Go Wild’.

In fact, you can surf the entire western seaboard, but the stretch of coastline from Donegal Town to Erris is particularly impressive.
It includes Mullaghmore Head, renowned for having one of the biggest waves in the world – the Prowlers wave, red-gold beach of Strandhill and Bundoran.

Bundoran has been long been a draw for surfers, many come from far flung parts of the world and some never leave. If you want to give it a try while visiting there are a number of local surfing schools that rent boards and equipment daily. Click here for more information on surfing in Bundoran.

But there’s so much more to Bundoran than waves.
You could say it’s the jewel in the crown of the North West of Ireland with something for everybody – splendid beaches, thrilling outdoor adventure and a wealth of family-friendly activities. For a list of things to do just click here.
